The upcoming 2016 will come out with a surprise for Apple® phone users with the introduction of a “pricing simplification” by American multinational telecommunications corporation AT&T on starting on January 8, 2016. The new plan from AT&T will put an end to previous plans, including device subsidies and two-year contracts. Now, new and existing AT&T customers will have to buy a smart phone at full price or through an AT&T Next payment plan, according to an internal training document distributed by Engadget. The price simplification effort for Apple® device buy options and pricing plans will see the light of the day in January next year.

AT&T has verified it strategy to end the two-year contracts in a statement:

“With $0 down for well-qualified customers, the ability to upgrade early and down-payment options available with even lower monthly installments, our customers are overwhelmingly choosing AT&T Next. Starting January 8, AT&T Next will be the primary way to get a new smartphone at AT&T.”

As shown in the statement, the new regulations will be applied on all smartphones and basic devices sold by AT&T and paid for using new installment plans. Information on handling of corporate accounts and non-smartphone devices by AT&T is not out yet. It is likely that many corporate users will go ahead with 2-year contract purchases.

With the introduction of Un-carrier payment plans, which separate device costs from plan costs, the focus on 2-year contracts and iPhone subsidies began to shift with T-Mobile in 2013. Verizon Communications, an American broadband and telecommunications company, also launched new smartphone rate plans and kicked out the subsidized two-year contract option for new users in August of 2015. It is reported that existing customers of Verizon customers can also renew their 2-year contracts. In addition, no-contract implementation from AT&T seems more severe as it will not let existing customers go ahead with the same contracts after it is expired.
